Columbae is a vegetarian, social justice-focused co-op run on the principle of consensus— the idea that house decisions on everything from food to communal principles should be made with the input and consent of everyone living in the house. The house is a very tight-knit community because we live in cozy rooms that switch every quarter and bond over working together to make our house a home— including through cleaning toilets and doing dishes. Our residents come together through a commitment to building strong relationships and dedication to our house theme of social justice, which we explore through frequent teach-ins and a wide variety of student initiatives, from rolling out to protests to thinking about our house’s purchasing and labor decisions can align with its moral and ethical values.
Some favorite house jobs include baking fresh bread and tending to our beautiful garden and firepit. The delicious smells of freshly baked goods waft through the house and lure you to the kitchen at all hours of the day, where you can always enjoy a cup of tea, and a deep discussion of anything from racial justice to your favorite musicians, with friends.
Because Columbae is designated as a vegetarian house, meat is restricted in the cooking area. Although our meat policy changes every quarter, meat can never be prepared or cooked in our kitchen.
In general, living as a part of a co-op community means that all residents contribute to each other’s safety and well-being. Residents have both weekly and bi-weekly jobs that could involve cooking, cleaning, baking, or even gardening. The commitments can take between three to four hours a week. Residents choose jobs at the beginning of each quarter, and staff can accommodate any accessibility concerns. Residents also organize an event related to the theme Social Change through Collective Action, attend three theme events per year, and participate in our theme week in Spring Quarter.
