Twain
Close to the heart of campus, Twain is adjacent to volleyball and basketball courts, and expansive lawns for lounging and relaxing. Together with the RFs, the Twain residential student leaders work hard at creating an inclusive, welcoming, warm, supportive and safe environment for everyone. This effort takes a variety of forms, from dinners at the RFs’ apartment to house concerts, fireside chats hosted by student leaders, and trips exploring some of the natural and cultural wonders of our area. Informally, residents regularly roll out to support each other in theater and sports, concerts, and other parts of campus life.
More About Twain
When not out and about, you’ll find Twainiacs in the East Lounge relaxing playing pool or table tennis, video or board games, or watching movies on the big screen. North Lounge is typically quieter, hosting study groups, quiet conversation, and impromptu piano performances
Resident Fellows
The Winn Family is excited to serve as Resident Fellows. Maisha T. Winn is a professor in the Graduate School of Education and the director of the Equity and Learning Initiative at the Stanford Accelerator for Learning. Lawrence “Torry” Winn is the Chancellor’s Leadership Professor in the School of Education at the University of California, Davis where he directs the Transformative Justice in Education (TJE) Center which he and Maisha co-founded in 2016.
Prior to joining the faculty at Stanford, Maisha was the Chancellor’s Leadership Professor at UC Davis, Susan Cellmer Distinguished Professor in the Department of Curriculum and Instruction at UW Madison, and faculty at Emory University. She earned her BA at UC Davis, MA in Education at Stanford (’98); and her PhD in Education/Language, Literacy, and Culture at UC Berkeley. Maisha’s research examines how non-dominant youth and communities have developed literate trajectories across a range of historical and contemporary settings within and outside formal schooling.
Torry Winn earned his BA at University of California, Berkeley; JD from Vanderbilt University, M.Div at Princeton Theological Seminary, and PhD in the School of Human Ecology at the University of Wisconsin, Madison. His research examines race, justice, critical consciousness, foresight, and how Black youth acquire social capital in out-of-school learning spaces.
Together they have created tools that explore the role of restorative and transformative justice in building healthy communities of practice. They are co-editors of Restorative Justice in Education: Transforming Teaching and Learning Through the Disciplines and Faith Made Flesh: The Black Child Legacy Campaign for Transformative Justice and Healthy Families (with Vajra Watson and Kindra F. Block).
Maisha and Torry are proud parents of two sons, Obasi and Zafir. As a family, they cherish visiting bookstores, traveling around the world, attending concerts and plays. You may find them moonlighting as caddies for their children’s golf tournaments.
